Bay of Quinte Bridal Show 2011

Yesterday was my final (don't quote me on that) bridal show for 2011. It was at the Bay of Quinte Golf and Country Club (a great venue for any fancy party or wedding). Unfortunately for the grooms, the golfing was put aside as it first rained, then snowed, then rained again. There was a strong wind all day, and the sun only came out for a brief period of time. After all of these winter galas, many of the vendors said we should have a show in September next time.
I took a variety of things, like I always do, and so I had different clients asking for different things: cookie favours, mini-cakes, cake-pops and your traditional stacked cake. Cupcakes are still an interest, so I had my cupcake tower there to show potential clients. In all I think I represented my business in the best way possible for a last showing.
I was also asked to do a short presentation, along with other vendors, before the fashion show. The program was titled, "Top 5 Things to Ask When Ordering a Wedding Cake." I think most cake decorators would agree with me, and I gave a little story for most of my points during the presentation, but feel free to comment if you have one that should have made the list:

  1. Where do you make your cakes? Go and see if it is a clean space, and health department approved.
  2. Are your cakes made from scratch? Always do a tasting. How many days ahead do you bake it?
  3. How many cakes do you make on a Saturday? You want to make sure they will spend an ample amount of time on your wedding cake.
  4. Ask about the structure/support system of the cake – you do not want a sinking or leaning cake. Do they deliver? Do they assemble at the venue or back at their kitchen?
  5. Look at the quality of their work. How long have you been decorating cakes? What are some of your original pieces? Your best reference is word-of-mouth references from other brides or friends that have used that cake decorator before.
Well, there you have it. It was a great day - well worth the effort. And, as always, I enjoyed networking with the other vendors in my area. More on that another day...
