One of my favourite things to do with cake is to make replicas of favourite things. For Aurora's 1st birthday, her mom brought in her stuffed unicorn for me to make out of carrot spice cake. I always hand-carve the cake - I never use a shaped pan, and then I can mould it to match the toy.
For Aurora's cake, I piped buttercream instead of using fondant in order to get that furry look. You can see her real stuffie in the background.Below is a similar cake I made for Ella's birthday a few months before, and the stuffie named "Moo Cow":
